“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ash Wednesday marks the official start of the season of Lent, a time in which Christians prepare for Easter through repentance, reflection and self-examination. Ash Wednesday emphasizes two themes: our sinfulness before God and our human mortality. Through worship, we remember that both have been triumphed through God's redeeming love in Jesus Christ.

Ash Wednesday worship services often include a time in which participants impose ashes on each other’s foreheads in the shape of the cross. The Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. In many churches, ashes are made by burning the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday.
